A Little Heart, A Mother’s Scent, A Beautiful Gift
An anonymous donor’s handmade NICU hearts are helping keep mothers and babies connected during moments when they cannot be together.
Sometimes the smallest gifts carry the biggest meaning.
Recently, an anonymous donor lovingly created and donated a collection of handmade NICU hearts for the Women’s Health & Birthing Unit at Battlefords Union Hospital.
At first glance, they are simple pieces of soft fabric, carefully sewn into the shape of a heart. But for a new mother who must be separated from her baby, that little heart can become something much more.
The idea behind the hearts is beautifully simple.
A cloth heart is given to mom to wear close to her body, allowing the fabric to carry her familiar scent. The heart can then remain with her baby, following the healthcare team’s safe-use practices, providing something familiar when mom cannot physically be there.
In its own quiet way, that little heart carries a message:
Mom is still close.
A Small Connection During a Difficult Moment
There are times when a newborn may need additional monitoring, treatment or care that means mom and baby cannot immediately be together.
For families who imagined those first hours and days very differently, even a temporary separation can be emotional.
A mother’s scent is one of the familiar sensory experiences a newborn comes to recognize. Research into maternal-scent interventions in neonatal care suggests that exposure to a mother's familiar scent may provide comfort and help reduce signs of stress in some newborns, although research into its broader clinical benefits continues.
The NICU hearts don't replace a mother's touch, skin-to-skin contact or the comfort of being held.
Instead, they offer one more gentle connection until mom and baby can be together again.
And sometimes, in healthcare, the smallest comforts matter enormously.
A Gift Our Nurses Can Share
The nurses in the Women’s Health & Birthing Unit at Battlefords Union Hospital are incredibly grateful to have these handmade hearts available to offer new moms and their babies when they are needed.
Healthcare is about excellent medical care, equipment and technology but it is also about the human moments surrounding that care.
It is the reassurance offered to an anxious parent.
The extra kindness during an uncertain day.
The small gesture that helps someone feel a little less alone.
These NICU hearts give our healthcare team another way to offer that compassion to families in their care.
And behind every one is someone in our community who took the time to make it.
Handmade With Love
To the anonymous donor who created these beautiful hearts: thank you.
You may never know the families who receive them.
You may never see the mother who holds one close before it is placed near her baby.
You may never know what that small piece of fabric means to someone during a moment when they simply want to be close to their child.
But your kindness will be felt.
And these hearts are part of a much bigger story of generosity that happens quietly throughout our community.
Over the years, thoughtful community members have donated handmade baby blankets, hats, mitts and other lovingly created items for patients and families at Battlefords Union Hospital.
Often there is no recognition attached.
There is no expectation of anything in return.
There is simply someone looking at what they have their hands, their talent, their time and deciding:
I can give this.
For BHC Foundation, that is philanthropy in one of its most beautiful forms.
“Some of the most meaningful gifts we see aren’t measured by a dollar amount. They are measured by the thought, time and love behind them. These beautiful NICU hearts, along with the blankets, hats, mitts and other handmade items donated to our hospital, are such a wonderful reminder of how deeply this community cares for one another. Someone took their time and their talent and turned it into comfort for a family they may never meet. To me, that is community giving at its very best.”— Leanne, Executive Director, BHC Foundation
At BHC Foundation, we are fortunate to see generosity in so many forms.
Sometimes it is a gift that helps purchase sophisticated medical equipment. Sometimes it supports an important healthcare project or helps create new possibilities for patient care.
And sometimes, generosity is handmade.
It is stitched, knitted or crocheted.
Sometimes, it fits in the palm of your hand.
To the anonymous donor who created these NICU hearts and to everyone who has lovingly made and donated items for patients and families at Battlefords Union Hospital thank you.
Your kindness becomes part of someone else’s care story.
