MORE THAN AN ARTIST

When I was asked to help create a legacy project around Evelyn’s artwork, I believed the goal was to preserve the beautiful creations she left behind.

What I came to realize was that Evelyn had already created her legacy long before any of us began talking about it.

Because Evelyn’s legacy was never just the art.

It was the life behind it.

Humble, gracious, and more comfortable shining a light on others than placing the spotlight on herself, Evelyn’s artwork was simply an extension of who she was. The beauty in her creations reflected the beauty in her character. The care she put into every detail reflected the care she gave to the people she loved.

A HEART FULL OF LOVE

Evelyn carried an incredible amount of love in her heart. She deeply loved her family and took pride in creating beauty in all things. Meticulous, organized, and always wanting to look her best even in her purple pajamas she carried herself with grace, dignity, and a sparkle that never seemed to fade.

But what I will remember most was her ability to make people feel like they belonged. Even if you weren’t family, she made you feel like family.

Her hugs lasted a little longer, her eyes told stories that words never could, and whenever she spoke about her art, they sparkled with a light that came alive from somewhere deep within.

HER GREATEST MASTERPIECE

A few days before her passing, I visited Evelyn in her palliative care room. Surrounding her were the things that mattered most – her artwork, her creations, and photographs of the people she loved.

Looking around that room, it became clear that her greatest masterpiece was never a painting. a door swag, or any of the beautiful creations she left behind.

It was the life she had created.

During that visit, I brought Evelyn a white African violet and a small stuffed animal. She held that little stuffed animal close and would not let it go. It was a simple moment, yet somehow it captured everything beautiful about her. Gentleness. Tenderness. Love.

THE LEGACY SHE LEAVES BEHIND

Not long after, Evelyn peacefully crossed the bridge. While her physical presence is no longer with us, the impact she made remains in the family she cherished, the friendships she nurtured, the beauty she created, and the countless lives she touched simply by being herself.

Her true artistry was the way she brought colour, warmth, and life into the hearts of others.

Just as an artist leaves their mark upon a canvas,

Evelyn left her mark on the people she met.

Her kindness. Her warmth. Her laughter. Her love. Those are the brushstrokes she leaves behind, and they will continue to live on in all of us.

Because while every painting eventually finds its place on a wall,

the love we leave in others becomes part of their story forever.

And perhaps that is the most beautiful masterpiece of all.
